Julie

He kissed me. He kissed me. Teenage Me keeps repeating. She’s completely lost her mind, or maybe I lost mine. I don't even know at this point.

The truth is I wanted to kiss him so, so badly. I was about to, but he didn't give me a chance. Instead, he pulled me halfway across a crowded club and kissed me like our lives depended on it.

I've never been kissed that intensely or passionately by anybody else before him. When our lips touched, the chemistry was instant. My body was tingling and hyper-aware. He literally took my breath away.

The truth is that it would be impossible to walk away from that feeling. I'm smart enough to realize that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. This could be something special. I can feel it in my bones.

The next day, I wake up early and start getting ready. I tell my mom I’m going to do some shopping for the bed and breakfast and head for the door. “Julieta Maria!” I stop and turn back.

“Yes?”

“Estás jugando con fuego.” You’re playing with fire, she says.

“Mami. It’ll be fine. We’re not doing anything.”

“Not yet. I’m not stupid. I would have to be stupid or blind to not see what’s going on here.” She pauses. “Please talk to your brother before it’s too late.”

“I will.”

“Also, for the record, I won’t be mad if you give me a grandkid or two… mejor… una nieta primero.” She’s wistfully staring into space. A granddaughter first, she says. Of course, she does.

“Mami, please. Don't get too many ideas.” She raises an eyebrow. Too late. I kiss her goodbye and head out before she can say anything else.

When I walk outside, Alex is waiting inside a truck. He waves at my mom.

“Buenos dias,” he says, holding a large cup of coffee.

After I hop in, I give him a quick kiss on the cheek. He grins. “Hi. Good morning," I say.

I notice my mom waving goodbye, a huge grin on her face.

Oh boy. The grandkid train has left the building.

After I put on the seat belt, I take the cup he offers and take a sip. It's delicious. I don't know if it’s the coffee or the company that’s different. “Where are we going?”

“We're going up to West Palm Beach. We’re going to swing by an estate sale and check out some antique shops… maybe talk.”

Talk? Teen Me decides she’s going to go with the flow and not overthink it. For once, she’s taking this very calmly.

“What are we looking for, Mr. Peña?” I ask.

He glances at me, then focuses on the road again. “Well, Miss Vargas, if you must know, we’re going to look for some Spanish-inspired vintage pieces. Old furniture. I was thinking some antique chairs to place around the house. Maybe a couple of mirrors… if we’re lucky, a few old books. Just because they’re cool.”

When I say, “That sounds amazing. I love it,” a slow smile spreads on his handsome face.

We spend the morning walking, talking, shopping, visiting old stores and collecting cool furniture pieces, and also kissing.
